AI website builders vs a designed website: what’s the real difference?
AI builders promise a website in minutes. Sometimes that’s all you need. Here’s an honest look at when they’re fine, and when they’ll cost you.

The promise
Type in your business name and a few details, and an AI builder will hand you a complete website: pages, layout, images and copy. For a small monthly fee and no designer, it sounds like a great deal.
Sometimes it is. Here’s how to tell.
When an AI builder is perfectly fine
- You’re testing an idea and need something online this week
- It’s a short-term project, like an event or a pop-up
- You have almost no budget and just need people to find your phone number
- Your business genuinely doesn’t rely on the website to win customers
In these cases, speed and cost matter more than polish. Go for it, and plan to replace it when the business grows.
Where AI-built sites fall short
They look like everyone else
AI builders produce what’s most typical for your industry. That means your site looks a lot like your competitors’, which makes it harder for customers to remember you or understand why you’re different.
The words are generic
AI copy tends to be confident and vague. Phrases like “passionate about delivering exceptional results” say nothing a customer can act on. Copy that actually converts is specific about who you help, how, and what happens next.
SEO is often an afterthought
Generated sites can have weak page structure, thin content, duplicate text and poor page titles. They might look fine to a visitor but give Google very little to work with.
Accessibility gets missed
Low contrast text, missing image descriptions, buttons that don’t work with a keyboard. These issues exclude real people and are easy to miss when nobody is checking.
You might not really own it
Many builders lock your site into their platform. If you want to leave, you may have to start again from scratch.
What a designed website gives you
A designed website starts with your customers and your goals, not a template. That means:
- A structure built around what visitors need to do
- Copy that sounds like you and answers real questions
- A look that reflects your brand rather than an average of your industry
- SEO and accessibility built in from day one
- A platform you own and can grow with
It costs more upfront. For a business that relies on its website for enquiries, it usually pays for itself.
The middle ground
This isn’t all or nothing. Good designers use AI tools too, to move faster through rough drafts and production work. The difference is that a person with experience is making the decisions, checking the details and taking responsibility for the result.
A quick way to decide
Ask yourself: if a potential customer compared my website with my two biggest competitors, would mine win? If the honest answer is no, and those customers are worth a lot to you, it’s time for a designed site.
