Why designers matter more than ever in the age of AI
AI can generate a website in minutes. That’s exactly why good design is now the difference between blending in and standing out. Here’s what AI can’t do for you.

Anyone can make a website now
A few years ago, getting a decent-looking website meant hiring someone. Now you can type a sentence into an AI tool and have a homepage in under a minute. Layouts, colours, stock images, even the copy, all generated on the spot.
It’s genuinely impressive. It’s also why so many new websites look exactly the same.
When everyone has access to the same tools, trained on the same patterns, they produce the same results. The same hero layout, the same gradient, the same three feature cards, the same confident but empty headline. AI has raised the floor of web design. It hasn’t raised the ceiling.
What AI is actually good at
Let’s be fair to it. AI is a brilliant assistant. It can:
- Produce rough layout ideas quickly
- Draft first versions of copy to react to
- Speed up repetitive production work, like resizing images or writing boilerplate code
- Summarise research and spot patterns in feedback
Used well, it saves hours. The problem starts when it’s used as the designer rather than a tool in the designer’s hands.
What AI can’t do for your business
Understand your customers
AI doesn’t sit in your shop, take your calls or hear the objections your customers raise. A good designer starts with the people your website needs to win over, then builds every decision around them. That’s strategy, and it doesn’t come from a prompt.
Make judgement calls
Design is thousands of small decisions. Which message goes first? What gets cut? Is this image saying the right thing about your brand? AI can give you options. Choosing the right one, and knowing why, is the job.
Build a brand that’s actually yours
AI works by predicting what usually comes next. That makes it great at average and bad at distinctive. Your brand needs to feel like you, not like the most statistically likely version of a business in your industry.
Get the details right
Accessibility, performance, SEO structure, how a page behaves on a cheap phone on a train. These are the details that decide whether a website works, and they’re exactly where generated sites tend to fall down.
Take responsibility
When a claim on your website is wrong, an image breaks copyright, or a form doesn’t work, someone has to own it. A designer and a studio stand behind their work. A prompt doesn’t.
So what does a designer do now?
The role has shifted, not shrunk. A good designer today:
- Uses AI to move faster through the early, rough stages
- Spends the time saved on strategy, craft and testing
- Edits ruthlessly, because generating options is now cheap but choosing well isn’t
- Brings taste, which is the one thing you can’t download
Think of AI as a very fast junior. Useful, tireless and always in need of direction.
What this means if you’re getting a new website
If a quote seems almost too cheap, ask how the site is being made. A generated template with your logo dropped in might look fine on launch day, but it won’t give you an edge, and it may cost you in search and conversions later.
Look for a team that can explain the thinking behind every decision. Ask who your site is designed for, what it needs them to do, and how they’ll know it’s working. If the answers sound like they came from a prompt, they probably did.
The bottom line
AI has made average websites cheap and easy. That makes a genuinely considered, well-crafted website more valuable, not less. In a sea of sameness, design is how you stand out.
