What local SEO actually is
Local SEO is everything that helps your business show up when people nearby search for what you do. Think "plumber Richmond", "café near me" or "accountant South Melbourne". These searches usually show a map with three businesses, then the regular results underneath.
Getting into that map pack, and onto page one below it, is one of the highest value things a local business can do. This checklist covers the lot, in the order we’d tackle it.
1. Your Google Business Profile
This is the foundation. If you only do one thing, do this.
- Claim and verify your profile
- Use your real business name, with no added keywords
- Pick the most accurate primary category, then relevant secondary ones
- Add your services, hours, photos and a clear description
- Set your service area if you travel to customers
We’ve written a full guide to getting your profile right, including photos and posts.
2. Your website’s local signals
Google needs to see that your website and your profile describe the same business in the same place.
- Put your business name, suburb and contact details in the footer of every page
- Make sure your page titles mention your main service and location, like "Electrician in Brunswick | Your Business"
- Create a page for each main service, not one page that lists everything
- If you serve several areas, write genuinely useful content for the main ones rather than copying a page and swapping the suburb
- Add local business schema so search engines can read your details
- Embed or link to your Google map on your contact page
3. Reviews
Reviews affect both your ranking and whether people choose you.
- Ask every happy customer, with a direct link that takes one tap
- Aim for a steady flow, not a burst every six months
- Reply to every review, including the bad ones, calmly and quickly
- Don’t buy reviews or offer rewards for them
4. Citations and consistency
A citation is any mention of your business name, address and phone number on another site, like Yelp, True Local, Hotfrog, Apple Maps, Bing Places or industry directories.
- List your business on the main Australian directories and the ones specific to your industry
- Use exactly the same name, address and phone number every time
- Fix old listings with outdated details, especially if you’ve moved
5. Mobile and speed
Most local searches happen on phones, often when someone needs you now. Your site should load quickly, have a tap-to-call button that’s easy to find, and never make people pinch and zoom.
6. Local content
Publish content that proves you know the area and the people in it. Project write-ups that mention the suburb, guides that answer local questions and pages about the areas you serve all help. Write them for humans first.
7. Local links
Links from other local websites are a strong signal. Sponsor a local club, join your business association, partner with complementary businesses or get featured in local news. Each relevant link helps.
8. Track your progress
Check your Google Business Profile performance and Search Console every month. Look at calls, direction requests, website clicks and which searches you’re showing up for. That tells you what’s working and where to focus next.
The short version
- Complete and verify your Google Business Profile
- Make your website clearly local, page by page
- Collect reviews every week
- Keep your details identical everywhere
- Publish genuinely local content
- Earn a few local links
- Measure monthly
